League of Legends Worldwide Power Rankings: Post-Gamescom

| August 23, 2012 | 114 Comments

ggChronicle provides Worldwide Power Rankings on a periodic basis, typically after the conclusion of major tournaments.  Make sure to follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook to get the latest League of Legends eSports updates!

Welcome to the newest edition of ggChronicle’s Worldwide Power Rankings, where we take into consideration events over the past few months since our last installment.

These rankings are compiled by polling some of the most experienced casters and personalities in the LoL eSports scene, as well as many of ggChronicle’s writers.  Contributors submit weighted lists using a point-based system, and final scores are tallied after submissions are completed.  There is no set number of teams in the ggC Worldwide Power Rankings, as we prefer to use a cut-off point to dictate who ends up on the list. Depending on how competitive the League of Legends eSports field is at any given time, you may see five teams or twenty.

Team profiles are written by Christopher “MonteCristo” Mykles and Domenic “DomNomNom” Sherony.

Our Power Rankings after Gamescom are:

Moscow Five

 3

(Previously #4)

Moscow Five returned to form at the Season Two European Regional Finals, looking every inch the czars that fans remembered for the majority of 2012. M5 obviously took a good look at themselves after losing DreamHack Summer to their continental rivals CLG.EU, and came back with a vengeance at ECC Poland and Gamescom. As this infographic aptly demonstrates, M5 is a LAN juggernaut on par with the best Korean teams, suffering defeat rarely compared to most teams worldwide. Moscow Five not only fields some of the most skilled players, but also holds some of the most creative, as their once-unique strategies have spread worldwide. The number one slot goes to the Russians, since they have more competitive experience than the Korean teams and look every bit as cohesive as their Asian rivals.

2

Azubu Blaze

 6

(Previously #8)

The defending champions of OGN’s Spring Season, Azubu Blaze leaps up the board after demonstrating their strength at the MLG Summer Arena. Chalking up a 10-1 win/loss ratio as the weekend unfolded in a sun-baked New York City, Blaze astounded fans worldwide with their coordination and strategies that challenged the established metagame in the West. Though they recently suffered defeat in the semi-finals of the OGN Summer Season, their loss came in a thrilling five game series against their sister team, Azubu Frost. The match was one of the closest in League of Legends history, and appeared to be decided by which team could pick Diana. While Frost may have come out on top at OGN, Blaze has more experience against non-Korean opponents and maintains a knowledge advantage going into the end of Season Two.

3

Azubu Frost

NEW

(Previously Unranked)

Azubu Frost successfully flew under the radar for several months after losing OGN’s Spring Season to their upstart little brother, Azubu Blaze. In between OGN seasons the two Azubu teams have lived together and trained almost exclusively in-house, making it difficult to judge their skill level for some time. Now, however, with their incredibly high-level play in the OGN Summer Season, the numerous talents of Frost are on parade for all to see. While Blaze holds a narrow edge in the Worldwide Power Rankings due to their past accomplishments and the incredibly narrow skill difference between the two Azubu teams, a victory in OGN’s Summer Season could advance Frost ahead of their sister squad.

4

CLG.EU

 2

(Previously #2)

We’ve gone a little far with the “What have you done for me lately?” mentality. A lackluster performance at Gamescom really shouldn’t have anyone down on Froggen, Wickd and Co.; their record prior to the European Regionals simply demands more respect. Look: CLG.EU is the only team with a winning record against Moscow Five at offline events. CLG.EU is the only non-Korean team still competing in OGN’s The Champions. Even the best teams slip up on occasion, and there’s every reason to expect them to be one of the most successful teams during the World Championship and beyond.

5

Team SoloMid

 4

(Previously #1)

Team SoloMid‘s slide down the rankings, in spite of another first place win at IPL Face Off, can be attributed to their singular defeat at the hands of Azubu Blaze in the MLG Summer Arena. Korea’s finest not only beat America’s darlings, they downright smashed them. While crushing defeats have energized TSM in the past, as fans know from their string of tournament wins after back-to-back losses to Moscow Five, the Baylife Bros need time to adapt and develop new strategies. Moreover, the other two big names in North America, CLG Prime and Dignitas, have sequestered themselves in Korea for several months, leaving less competition for TSM in their string of victories. A big win at the North American Regionals could send them back up the rankings, but for now they lose ground when compared to their Korean and European peers.

6

CLG Prime

 3

(Previously #3)

CLG Prime remains one of the truly difficult teams to evaluate, due to their secret training in Korea and their exit from OGN’s The Champions in the quarterfinals.  While some fans might view their recent defeat as evidence of their weakness, losing to one of the top three teams in the world is hardly an embarrassment.  They should remain competitive in the North American scene, and are obviously developing creative strategies for use in the upcoming Regionals at PAX, such as the Promote team composition that we witnessed in OGN.  CLG will either rise significantly or fall precipitously in the ggC Rankings based on their performance in the coming weeks.

7

SK Gaming

NEW

(Previously Unranked)

SK played two truly remarkable games against CLG.EU at the EU Regionals before falling to Moscow Five and securing second place. For that, they deserve every bit of accolade and attention they’re receiving. But here’s our question: Who was on SK a month ago? Ocelote, Nyph and… That’s right, nobody even knows anymore. Professionals have been riding the SK carousel all year. The current version finally gives team captain Ocelote the type of talent that can pick up the slack when he falters, but SK must prove they can keep it together from one event to the next before we can move them higher. If they can see things through, though, this just might be the team to watch going into Season Three.

8

Curse NA

NEW

(Previously Unranked)

The boys at Curse usually look like they’re having fun, and for all the bickering and in-fighting we hear during their matches, it’s good that they’re enjoying everything else going for them. Our question: will all this pomp and circumstance about mansions and reality shows translate to results on the Fields? Curse seems a lot like pre-Kiev TSM, when the Baylife Bros talked big and partied hard but failed to deliver when it mattered. It looked like a new version of the same story after Curse‘s first match at IPL… until San Fran’s darlings rallied from the Loser’s Bracket to take second place. We’ve seen them pull some incredible feats (like taking the only game against Azubu Blaze at MLG Summer Arena); the next step is proving they’re more than a second-place team.

9

NaJin Sword

NEW

(Previously Unranked)

NaJin Sword becomes the second Korean “B Team” to oustrip its original line-up in terms of tournament results, following the success of Azubu Blaze.  Team captain MakNooN frequently shows audiences why he is one of the best Top Lane players in the world, and is the heart and soul of the Sword line-up.  While the other players might less famous than MakNooN, NaJin holds the extraordinary advantage of being coached by Starcraft: Brood War legend Reach.  With a management team with years of experience in eSports discipline, it’s not hard to understand Sword’s success.  Look for Sword to advance in the ggC Rankings if they can take down CLG.EU in the OGN Summer Season’s last semi-final match.

10

Dignitas

 4

(Previously #6)

At their best, this is a group capable of throwing down with Moscow Five, the CLGs and Team SoloMid; at their worst, this team’s just capable of throwing. What we all want to know is whether or not this current lineup can deliver like the Team Dignitas of old, the lineup that used pinpoint map control and excellent teamwork to overwhelm their competition. A lot of people want it, but we need to see it to believe it. The decision to attend MLG Summer Championship is a wise one; it’s a low-risk opportunity to remind everyone that they ARE as good as their reputation suggests.

Honorable Mentions:

fnatic stands at the top of the list of honorable mentions, as they barely failed to qualify for the Season Two World Championship.  They look strong, but not quite up to par with the teams on the board.

Xenics Storm got a bit unlucky in facing Azubu Blaze in the quarterfinals of the OGN Summer Season.  They remain one of Korea’s finest LoL squads, and could win a place on the rankings in the future.

Legion took the world by surprise at IPL Face Off and possess the raw talent to hang with North America’s best if they can deliver consistent results.

The Taipei Assassins fell hard after failing to perform in the ggClassic and the disappointing results of their measuring stick, the Singapore Sentinels, at IPL Face Off.  They haven’t had a lot of motivation to perform in the weak Garena League, but they might shape up for the World Finals in October.

World Elite also tumble after a mediocre showing in San Francisco, as we expected more out of China’s hottest squad.

Curse EU lost their slot in the Power Rankings after failing to produce at Gamescom and getting knocked out in the first round.  It’s a pity that the team can’t live up to its solid online results.

  1. Kashim says:

I’m quite surprised to see CLG Prime so far up on a list like this. They haven’t performed well in OGN and were in a slump even before they went to Korea. In fact, I can’t even remember the last time they beat a top team or won a tournament. Also surprised to see iG excluded from the list. They’ve been beating teams like WE and TPA lately, and look really strong with unorthodox team comps and overall exciting play.

  2. Jon says:

Not really in a slump before they went to OGN they came in second at MLG Anaheim even taking a series from TSM during the grand finals and losing to Frost isn’t really an indicator of them being bad.. after all Frost did beat Blaze. I think it will be alot easier to judge them after the next offline event.

  3. Im disappointed that my name isn’t Joe “Joe Miller” Miller.

We might get a better result after the Season 2 Championship. I’m so excited about LoL right now.

lol. You previously had m5 as #4? Below TSM? What a joke. They have been number one since Kiev.

  8. Methis says:

Hey… It’s in2LOL, not In2LoL. Besides that: good read, really like stuff like that :3

  9. Elealar says:

Surprised by Fnatic being so low. They took a game off M5, which is more than you can say for SK. SK did beat CLG.EU in a convincing fashion but that’s the only sparkle they’ve shown in a long, long time and their line-up still keeps switching. I’d say Fnatic deserves a spot more than SK does (though yeah, they didn’t get to the Finals while SK did).
