Power Rankings – LCS NA Week One

ggChronicle provides regional Power Rankings on a weekly basis to track the performance of teams. Make sure to follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook to get the latest League of Legends eSports updates!
With the first week of the League of Legends Championship Series done and dusted in North America, ggChronicle proudly presents our first Power Ranking of the season. Please note that we only listed teams that appeared in the first two days of competition, thereby removing Complexity and Team Marn from consideration until after week two.
Questions about the performance of the traditional top three teams in NA, CLG, TSM, and Dignitas, lingered before this weeks matches given the scarcity of competition in the months leading up to the LCS. While the games yielded a few answers, superior performance from unexpected quarters kept the matches fresh at the conclusion of the first round.
ggChronicle creates power rankings from a weighted poll of its staff. Comments written by Christopher “MonteCristo” Mykles based on feedback from ggC contributors.

As the undefeated team in the first week of the LCS, Curse‘s claim as the “Asian team of North America” rings true both in terms of performance and dedication to practice. The team’s heavy preparation for the LCS qualifier gave them momentum at the start of the season. Coach Steve “LiQuiD112” Arhancet’s watchful eye over their practice and team compositions no doubt contributed to Curse’s success as well. The emphasis on “Voyboy Unchained” allows the top lane star to shine, while the structure previously imposed by CLG shackled his skill. Though they looked vulnerable against GGU, big wins against CLG and Dignitas put them on top. |

Counter Logic Gaming debuted two new player in the Championship Series, but appeared strong even against teams with long-term synergy. The addition of Teleport-happy LiNk fits like a glove with CLG’s focus on map control and split pushing, but it takes time to develop solid teamwork. Victories against Team SoloMid and Good Game University earn them the number two slot, but they nip at Curse‘s heels. CLG implemented a management structure during the off-season that aims to improve the efficiency of their practice, and GM Kelby May takes the helm full-time this week to help his team prepare. |

Team SoloMid stumbled out of the starting blocks against CLG, but roared back from their deficit with a pair of wins against Vulcun and Dignitas. TSM’s strengths remain the same as always: clever compositions and sterling teamfighting. Both of these qualities came into play against Dignitas when TSM fielded a set of champions that both shredded and buffed armor while executing their gameplan perfectly. As the most dominant team in North America in 2012, TSM seeks to regain their crown through intensified practice and team discipline. |

The biggest surprise of the first week of the LCS, Good Game University showed a bright spark of potential through hard-fought games with Curse and CLG. The remaining members of perpetual North American contenders Team Dynamic form the team’s core, but new additions look promising, particularly DontMashMe. The plague that affects many teams with new members struck GGU, as they must learn to increase advantages and close games. The team’s decisions in champion select showed promise in their match against Curse as they selected an impeccable “protect the Twitch” composition. They will be a force to be reckoned with if they can fuse their theorycrafting with their in-game tactics. |

Dignitas |

The loss of veteran jungler IWillDominate seemed to affect Dignitas more than expected in the season’s first few matches. While the team took down Vulcun, losses piled up against Curse and TSM. Dignitas’ scatter-brained picks and bans compounded their issues in the laning phase in week one, causing the team to look far from rock solid. Lack of practice dogs Dignitas as their housing situation prevented the team from adequately preparing for the LCS. Look for team captain Scarra to mend Big D’s wounds in the coming couple weeks as they move into their new home and get down to business. |

Vulcun started their LCS season with a disappointing 0-2 record, yet most predicted this result against North American powerhouses TSM and Dignitas. Though League of Legends veterans compose the Vulcun roster, they lack LAN experience compared to their first two opponents. Against TSM the team looked nervous and made questionable calls in lane, leading to early tower losses and an insurmountable disadvantage. Vulcun can take a solace in the fact that VOD review should correct their most serious errors, while week after week in the Riot studios will steel their nerves. |

What’s this–a well-written article about League of Legends? Thank you, MonteCristo, for being literate.
Cool – cool, cool, cool!
1) Agreed. Curse looks the most practiced, and apart from their really tight game against GGU, they’ve been really strong in their games so far. Voyboy is, in my mind, unquestionably the best top laner in NA, and that will be Curse’s strength all season, alongside SV’s versatility in the jungle.
2) Agreed. I was actually surprised Curse beat CLG so early, honestly. Chauster usually has a way to handle/counter SV’s overall playcalls. It shows a lot of growth out of Curse. But CLG still is adjusting to roster changes, so they’re prone to change either for the better or the worse in short term.
3) Agreed. Wasn’t expecting them it, but…TSM is still TSM. They are very prone to move up as the season goes on and they get back in a high octane practice schedule.
4) Disagree for the moment. Their team fighting is great, but they haven’t shown knowledge on how to close games. DontMashMe showed really poor positioning in the game versus Curse (even when “baiting” himself… I think he was making mistakes.) and I’m not sold on Shiphtur in mid. Until they actually WIN a game, I can’t put them above Dignitas.
5) Should be #4, they at least showed a very dominant victory apart from getting caught twice midgame. They very clearly showed understanding of how to end games.
6) We’ve only seen one team comp out of them so far (Ryze mid + late game AD Carry with no one having superb waveclear). If they can figure out team compositions better, and Xmithie/Sycho Squid can get better playcalls outside of team fights for themselves, they’ll rise up a bit. Until then, though…they may even drop once coL / MRN come into the picture.
CLG are incredibly new to their roster. Bigfatlp was dropped and he was a great teamfighter. 2 new players are in so their immediate synergy is reduced by a significant margin including team-fighting and co-operation in lane. As shown in their game against CRS their teamfights are weak, especially against a team like CRS who have had several months as a team with the same roster. I expect great things out of them. I agree with you on Dignitas being 4 as I’m not quite sold on GGU yet until they can close games properly. Even though they obviously have great potential it doesn’t mean much if they still aren’t winning any games.
I can see where you’re coming from ranking GGU above Dig. GGU played some impressive matches against Curse and CLG, nearly taking games off both. The problem is that inability to finish games has ALWAYS been an issue with GGU, dating back to the TD days. To me, it looked like Dig just having a bad day while GGU did what it always does – find ways to lose. Until GGU proves they can close out against big teams, I still have difficulty personally ranking them above an established competitive team.
Given a few weeks, though, I could see either team topping each other. It’s a matter of whether GGU can improve late-game decision making or D can get back on the ball.
